This Sunday and Monday will see the return of the Oxford and Cambridge Trial VIIIs races to the River Thames in London.
After the cancellation of The Boat Race in 2020 and the move to Ely for The Gemini Boat Race 2021, the Clubs are delighted to be back in London as preparations continue for The Gemini Boat Race 2022 which will take place on Sunday 3 April 2022.
The Trial VIIIs, which sees matched crews from the same Club race against each other over The Championship Course, form a key part of the Boat Race season. They come at the end of the autumn academic term for the student athletes and are usually the last key event before the Christmas break.
The Trial VIIIs races give the coaches the opportunity to see how their athletes fare under the unique side by side racing and the unpredictable conditions on the Tideway.
Following the postponement of the Women’s Trial VIIIs races for both Oxford University Women’s Boat Club and Cambridge University Boat Club (Women) due to positive Covid -19 cases (see announcement)
HERE it will be the Dark Blues of Oxford University Boat Club will be the first on the start line at Putney at 1300hrs on Sunday 19 December. Just over twenty four hours later it will the turn of the Light Blues of Cambridge University Boat Club (Men) who will start their Trial VIIIs race at 1335hrs.
There will be opportunities to spot the crews as they make their way down the Championship Course and you are encouraged to give a cheer for the crews if you see them on Sunday and Monday.
For those who don’t have easy access to the riverbank there are other ways to follow the race.
For the first time at Trial Eights, Ludum (a sports training management & performance analysis company) will record & provide streamed athlete performance data in real time, bringing a whole new dimension to the racing action. Viewers will be able to see live pace, stroke rate, distance travelled and exact boat locations throughout the two races. The action will unfold like never before, and the intricacies of technique and tactics will be unveiled to those watching at the clubs, home and across the world.
